The Ruling on Fasting Ramadhan 28 Days
“A friend of mine who’s currently studying in India, asked me yesterday through Yahoo Messenger about the ruling on fasting Ramadhan for only 28 days because she will come back to Malaysia today. In India, they start fasting today. That means by the time we, in Malaysia has already fasting 2 days, she will just start her fasting and then celebrate her Raya Idilfitri in Malaysia. Sum up all the days she is fasting (if she can fast full till Raya Idilfitri), it will be only 28 days. So, she doubts whether it is permissible to fast only 28 days for the month of Ramadhan or she need to replace (qadha’) another one day to make it 29 days of fasting.”
This is the answer that I got from Syaikh `Abdul-`Azeez Bin Baz (Fatawa Islamiyah, Vol. 2, p.234);
It is confirmed in the extensive authentic Hadith from Prophet Muhammad SAW that the month of Ramadhan is not less than 29 days. When it is confirmed with Islamically valid evidence that the month of Syawal has entered after the Muslims have only fasted 28 days, this means that they did not fast on the first day of Ramadhan. Therefore, they must make up for it, because it is not possible for the month to be 28 days. The month for fasting in Ramadhan is only 29 or 30 days.
Same goes to anyone who fasted in Saudi Arabia or another land, then we travelled and fasted the rest of the month in our own land (East Asia) or another place, then break our fast in the last land even it is more than 30 days. This is due to the statement of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, “The fast is the day that you all fast and breaking the fast is the day when you all break the fast. ” However, if we did not complete 29 days of fasting, we must complete that (number of fasting days).This is because the month is not less than 29 days.
In conclusion, we can fast more than 29 days, whether 30 or 31 days but not less than 29 days. If the number of fasting days is less than 29 days, we need to replace the day and make up to befitting 29 days.
